DryWall Screws
Drywall screws are the preferred choice when it comes to securing sheets of drywall (full or partial) to either wall studs or ceiling joists. The three main features of drywall screws are screw length, gauge, and thread.
In terms of length, if the drywall is 1/4 inch, then screws of between 1 and 1 1/4 inch should be used. If the drywall is 1/2 inch then a screw of 1 1/4 inch or 1 5/8 inch should be used. If the drywall is 5/8 inch, then screws of 1 5/8 or 2 inches should be used. The drywall that is installed in most residential properties is 1/2 inch thick.
When it comes to threads in drywall screws, there are two types: coarse, and fine. Coarse-thread screws should be used for most wood studs and are designed to create a strong grip in the wood. Fine-thread drywall screws are self-threading, making them a good choice for installing drywall onto metal studwork.
