5 Easy Garden Projects Using Timber Sleepers to Transform Your Outdoor Space This Spring
Timber sleepers are one of the most versatile materials that we sell, and for good reason. These chunky, rectangular pieces of sawn timber can be used for a wide variety of landscaping and gardening purposes. Some of the easiest garden projects you can create at home with sleepers include:
1. Raised beds.
Whether for flowers or growing fruit or vegetables, raised beds create a beautiful, defined growing space with excellent drainage and no need for kneeling pads. They are also incredibly simple to build. All that is needed is to cut the sleepers to size, sanding off any rough edges, then stack them on top of each other and hold them in place with long screws.
2. Children's sandpit.
Like raised beds, sandpits are incredibly easy to craft, though to prevent the sand from escaping, it is recommended that they are laid atop a thick tarpaulin, which is then stapled into place before filling it with sand. One sleeper height is usually ample for a small sandpit, although most children will thoroughly enjoy digging and playing in a deeper one if you decide to make it higher. Remember to attach low-profile hooks to the outside so that a second tarpaulin can be used to securely cover the sandpit when it is not in use, protecting the sand from the elements and next door's cat.
3. Garden edging.
Sleepers can be used to define zones within your garden, to create paths or even to make a permanent border to separate your flower beds from the lawn. It is recommended that when sleepers are used for this purpose, they should be slightly dug into the ground to hold them firmly in place. Dig a trench the width of the sleeper and up to a third of the sleeper's height and put a thin layer of gravel into the hole before setting the sleeper in place. This can aid drainage and prevent the sleeper from rotting at ground level.
4. Benches and tables.
Timber sleepers can be used to build your own garden table and garden bench seats to your exact specifications. You could keep it very simple, creating two stacks of sawn sleepers of the desired height, then placing other sleepers across them to create a table, or be more adventurous, creating cross beams, support struts and other architectural elements and securing them in place with metal brackets to enjoy a professional-looking result.
5. Steps.
Sleepers can be dug into a sloped garden to create steps. Whether these are just used to access the higher parts of the garden during inclement weather that would render the grass slippery and inaccessible, or used to provide structural reinforcement against erosion, they are the perfect DIY solution. Again, when digging sleepers into the ground, lay a thin layer of gravel first and if necessary, secure the sleepers in place with strong metal stakes to prevent them from slipping. Tread strips or grip paint can make sleeper steps safer, preventing you from slipping when using them in wet or icy conditions.
Top tips for using sleepers in your garden projects
Although most sleepers are pre-treated against rot and infestation, it is a good idea to treat them with a preservative once the project is complete and again at regular intervals to keep them in good condition. Remember to sand down any cut edges before treating them as this will not only protect you against splinters but ensure that all of the timber is treated before use.
When using sleepers for planters, make sure to line them to prevent soil from escaping and spoiling the appearance of your garden. Suitable products include landscaping fabric, coconut liners and geotextile fabric. Always check whether you need to poke drainage holes into the bottom of your chosen liner, since otherwise, your plants could become waterlogged and fail.
Finally, choose a sleeper colour scheme and stay consistent with it as swapping between green, brown and oak (or worse, mixing them in the same project) will create a confusing look that detracts from the brilliance of your DIY skills. Take the time to plan out your project, deciding which colour sleeper best suits your tastes and your garden decor and you will surely create an outdoor space to be proud of.
